VISUAL CONSULTING FAQ

PROCESS

How does graphic recording work?

Graphic recording is live drawing during a meeting, event, keynote presentation… etc. I don’t draw the events happening in the room like a courtroom artist would. Instead, I draw the conversation, what’s being said, as it unfolds in real-time. At the end, you get a visual summary map of what’s been said.

What is visual coaching?

Visual coaching is coaching + sketch noting. In this intimate one-on-one setting, I can use my ICF-certified coaching skills just like in a regular coaching session, all while mapping our conversation and streaming the image to you in real time. The visuals become a 3rd participant in our discussion mirroring your back to you.

What is the difference between graphic/visual facilitation and graphic recording?

With graphic facilitation, I focus on designing and managing the process rather than simply creating the graphics. Visuals take the form of templates drawn ahead of time and filled out with the group.

Will you come to graphic record my event in person?

If your event is happening in the southern interior of British Columbia, yes! Absolutely. (Pending availability). If you’re somewhere else in the world: very probably! Let’s chat about it.

Do graphic recording and facilitation work for virtual and hybrid meetings?

Yes! Through the magic of technology, you can bring the power of graphic recording and graphic facilitation into any meeting: in-person, hybrid or fully virtual.

Visual coaching is always offered as a virtual service.

Can you make me a graphic recording from a recording/report/document?

Yes! This is called strategic illustration. It’s when you already know what you want in the graphic and we work together to synthesize the information and I translate it into graphics.

I won’t turn a 100 page report or thesis into a graphic recording, however. For strategic illustration you’ll need to synthesize your message into an amount of text that we agree on ahead of time.

How much does ______ cost?

All visual consulting services are super custom, so that’s why prices aren’t listed. We’re happy to give you a ballpark idea or a formal estimate if you reach out with a description and scope for your project.

COACHING FAQ

BURNOUT COACHING

I've tried coaching and therapy before, and I'm still stuck?

It might not have been the right timing or the right fit. Most support systems were designed for a different kind of person than you are. Insight-based approaches only go so far without somewhere to actually practice doing things differently. If you've done a lot of inner work already, you're not starting from zero. You're ready for the next part.

Do I need to choose a topic for each session?

Coaching usually centres around one topic per session. But sometimes arriving at a clear topic or question is half the work. Sometimes the topic shifts as we explore it.

If you have a specific topic, great! If you have only a vague idea, no problem. I’m happy to help you get to the clarity you need.

In our initial session we’ll talk about a zoomed out vision for what you’d like to explore or accomplish in our time together. This gives us a good place to start each time we meet.

What if we’re not a good fit?

It happens! Usually, one or both of us will notice and say something. If you feel this coaching relationship isn’t what you need, then I applaud your clarity. I’m happy to recommend someone else and/ or wish you well on your next steps. Sessions are purchased individually so there are no packages to refund.

I'm already overwhelmed. I don't have capacity for one more thing.

If you're in acute burnout and genuinely can't hold another commitment, this might not be the right moment, and I'd rather you know that upfront.

Most people who find me are either rebuilding post-burnout, or in the chronic version: functional but not thriving, managing but not moving. For that, coaching isn't one more thing on the list. It's the thing that starts to reorganize the list. We go at your pace, and if you need to slow down or take a break, we plan for that.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

The simple answer is a question: how well resourced do you feel?

I think of coaching as something we do when we have resources and want to improve our lives. Therapy comes in when we are underresourced and need help to get our head above water. If therapy is a life preserver, coaching is a sail for your sail boat.

What does “trauma informed coaching” mean?

It means I’m well versed in how the difficult things we’ve experienced in life show up in our lives and bodies. I’m practiced at sensing when you get activated, and I know how to help you ground in your strength.

It does not mean we will directly work on trauma the way you might with a therapist.

It’s important to work with a trauma-informed coach because coaching will always push us out of our comfort zone. We have “blocks” for a reason. They’re usually survival strategies. You deserve support from someone who understands this, and knows how to open more choices for you in a way that doesn’t flood your nervous system.

I've never spent this kind of money on myself.

That discomfort is worth noticing, and it's often one of the first things we work on. The belief that you have to earn care through productivity is one of the core patterns that leads to burnout.

If cost is a genuine barrier, two sliding scale spots are available by application, with a lower end of $75 CAD. Reach out and we'll figure out what's possible.

Can individual coaching fix a systemic problem?

No — and I won't pretend otherwise. Individual resilience isn't a substitute for systemic change, and it’s not possible to opt out of oppressive systems completely.

But we do need to navigate the system we're in as well as we can while it changes. The more people who refuse to participate in their own diminishment and bring their actual selves into their work and lives, the more that shifts the landscape around them. Coaching is one place to practice that. For most people, it turns out to matter quite a lot.

What’s your approach to neurodivergence?

I’m trained specifically to work with neurodivergent folks. But I’ve found that, surprisingly, coaching everyone as I’ve been trained to coach neurodivergent folks is more effective.
By that I mean:

  • I’m curious about how each person, specifically, functions.

  • I believe that adaptations are for all humans and not just a few people on the fringes.

  • I take a strengths based approach no matter who I’m working with.

I use the social model of disability in my work. There are some specific challenges that neurodivergent folks (diagnosed or not) often face. For example overusing areas of gifted-ness to compensate for challenge areas, and dealing with specific trauma around rejection, self trust, and being controlled.

My work in general is based in the unschooling approach to self-directed learning. This is a way of learning that works especially well for many neurodivergent folks.

VISUAL COACHING

What is visual coaching?

Visual coaching is coaching + sketch noting. In this intimate one-on-one setting, I can use my ICF-certified coaching skills just like in a regular coaching session, all while mapping our conversation and streaming the image to you in real time. The visuals become a 3rd participant in our discussion mirroring your back to you.

Will my images be the same quality as graphic recording images?

No. The images that come out of visual coaching are sketch notes, and not full polished pieces.

Graphic recording takes my full 150% attention. I can’t coach and draw at that level at the same time. However, I’ve been graphic recording for over a decade and my visual translation skills are finely tuned even when I’m multitasking. You’re in expert hands.

If you’re after a polished, tailor made graphic, strategic illustration is the way to get there.

What can I do with my images

Pretty much anything you like! I’ve had clients print their images out as vision boards, use them as images as visual aids in presentations or during conversations, snip them down into clip art and more.

The only (minor) limitation is that all custom images I create are licensed under a Creative Commons attribution license.
If you are Indigenous, intellectual property rights for your image are transferred to you directly under the principles of OCAP.

How will I receive my images?

I send you a link to download all the files for your personal use!
You get print (PDF), web (JPG) and source (PSD) files.

Please make sure you download your images, and store them somewhere secure. I’m not able to archive files due to size and volume

Can I book only visual coaching sessions?

You may want more than one visual session. Especially for a long and complex project, and you absolutely can.

A caveat: I find visual coaching works best as a tool to deploy within an ongoing coaching relationship. Coaching is about partnership and process. If we just focus on getting a visual output your benefits from the coaching its self might not be as fruitful. A bit like how a bowl of basil won’t be as delicious as basil on a margarita pizza.
